Male and Female Betta's in the Same Tank?

Male Betta's are very aggressive fish.  They will even be aggressive towards female Betta's. It's only recommended to have a male and female in the same tank if you are planning to breed them.

Male Betta's will attack and nip at the females and possibly killing them.

So, unless you plan on breeding them, keep them separated in differnt fish tanks.

Sorry to hear about your female Betta David.

I'd be more then happy to help you raise your betta's. Feel free to post any comments or questions you may have on the blog and either myself or any other betta enthusiast will help you out.

I do recommend removing your male betta into its own personal tank. Betta's dont' require much space so any small jar will house a single male betta nicely.

It's hard to say why the male is chasing her under belly as it sounds like he's not the 'father'? However, I do recommend moving the female betta and the male chasing her into another tank. During breeding the male creates surface bubbles and will place the eggs into these bubbles after the female releases them. At this point you will want to remove both fish until the eggs hatch. (I just re-read your comment...if the pregnant fish isn't a female betta then ignore the breeding instructions)

Your next step is to separate your male betta from the rest of the fish. And make sure to have a few rocks and plants in your 10 gallon tank that will allow the fish hiding spaces. Having places to hide will lower stress on fish.

Hope that covers the basics. Best of luck to you.

Last week my crowntail betta had made very large bubble nests, so on Sunday I bought a pink female for him and put it in there for him and he killed her. So now what should I do if I want to mate him? Thanks, Theresa

theresa i have an answer for you. first you need to have a small jar for the female beta and a sponge filter. after you have these things put the sponge filter in your tank/bowl then place the female beta in the jar then place the jar in the tank/bowl and when she has white lines on her side that means she is ready to breed then you should relese her into the tank and the male should make a bubble nest and if the female does not like it she will tear it apart. during the mating process they should nip each other`s fins when you can see eggs in the bubble nest then you should immediately take the female out. after you can see the fry swimming around immediatley take the male out in about one month you should begin to seperate the males the females can live together

Okay so i just got a crowntail and female Betta, I thought since they were male and female i should put them in a tank and watch them to see what they do, they were fine for a few hours then suddenly the crowntail started to flare up and nip at the female fish, I put her in a different tank of course, but my question is why would he be suddenly attack the female when they were rubbing against each other and swimming by each other with no problem then suddenly attack the female like they weren't just doing that?

I have a small tank with three female betta's and one male. They chased each other to start with but hv had them for 2 months now and they hv settled down and are fine together. I hv another tank with guppies and mollies and had fry so i bought a small breeding tank which floats in your tank and you can keep mummy and babies in there then seperate them.
